The Community Services Department often receives phone calls from citizens about a fire hydrant open and running at different locations throughout the City. There are many reasons possible for such an occurrence. Some possible reasons are:

  • City crews are repairing a line break/leak in a nearby location and have opened the fire hydrant to relieve pressure on the line to make the repair easier.
  • Routine flushing of water lines, particularly in cul-de-sacs and dead end locations, to keep the water fresh and maintain a disinfectant residual.
  • Flushing of creeks/waterways where wastewater lines have broken and been repaired.
  • Flushing and testing involved in the routine maintenance of fire hydrants.

However, with water conservation on the minds of all concerned citizens, feel free to contact the Community Services Department at 772-4050 if you have any questions about an open hydrant encountered within the City of Woodway.
